Welcome to Fender Avenue!

I created this site to provide an independant forum for discussing my favorite guitar brand, G&L. I have left it very open and intend to leave it as unmoderated as possible. Try and be polite.

My only hard and fast rule is that I do not want pornography on the site. I'm not talking about censoring reasonable stuff, but please keep the explicit stuff off. I don't want some 12 year old G&L fan's mom calling me up to chew me out. Also, there are quite a few lady G&L fans. Let's keep the place respectable.

When registering, you do not need to enter any real information. You can use any of the many aliases off your fake passports that you want. You don't need to enter your phone number, shoe size, bank account numbers, nothin. The only thing you need is a working email address. I would ask that you put something in the City, Region (State in the USA), and Country. Doesn't need to be specific but it would be nce to see where people are coming from. Completely voluntary. And of course, you don't need to register at all unless you want to post.

The forum is setup to use the "display name" as your displayed name (unexpected, I know). But... there are parts of the site that may show the user name or first name, last name. So, if you don't want your name or userid to be seen, put something you don't care about in there.

If you have problems, suggestions, complaints post them in the Web Site Issues forum. If you can't register, send an email to admin@fenderavenue.com

Now, go post a picture in the Guitar Porn Forum (no, not that kind of picture) and add a review for your local or online store in the reviews section.

Have fun.

Private Messaging

The board has a private messaging feature which allows people to send each other messages without them showing up in the forum. Because we do not expose email addresses, it is difficult to send another member a private email without having them post their email in an open forum (not a good idea).
By default, Private Messaging is turned off. Each use must opt in by turning it on.
To do this:
  1. Click "My Settings" using the toolbar above.
  2. Click "Forum Settings" on the left menu to expand the section.
  3. Click "Edit Settings" below that
  4. Check the "Enable Private Messages" checkbox
  5. Check the "Receive PM emails" checkbox (if you want to get an email notification)
  6. While you in "My Settings", look around. There is a bunch of helpful stuff there.
Once you do that, you should see a new toolbar icon in the forum top menu that will open your inbox. To send messages just click on a user name. You will get to the user profile screen and be able to send a message using the "Message User" link.
Note: There is no admin interface to show me your messages. I will not be reading your messages. I don't care about your messages. You can call me whatever you want and I will never know. BUT!!!! all of the forum data is stored in a database. This means that anyone with administrative privileges on the server can open the database and browse the raw data. If you are worried about this then don't use private messaging to talk about your secret new patent for gyro stabilized plectrums.

Posting Pictures

There's been a few questions regarding pictures. There are two avenues to take. You can link an image that resides on some other website or you can upload a picture from your local machine to the forum.

To link to a picture hosted elsewhere:

  1. The standard way is to select the "insert/edit image" icon on the editor toolbar. Paste the url to the picure in the URL textbox. You can also set the size, border, add a hyperlink to it, etc in that dialog box.
  2. In IE ou can just right click the image on the orginal page and then paste it in the editor here. I doubt this will work in Firefox.

To upload a picture to this server:

  1. First, I limited pictures to 1MB in size to keep from filling the server up. If your picture is bigger than that, reduce the size or color depth or something to get it under 1MB.
  2. Locate the image file you want to upfload on your hard drive, right click on the file and select "copy" (or similar depending on your Operating System)
  3. Paste the image where you want it in the Post Editor.window and submit the post.
  4. Once you do this, you can use it again later in another posting by using the "To link to a picture hosted elsewhere" instructions above. Just find the original post and link to it there. Right click and select properties to see the URL it was saved under. This will save you from having to upload it over and over (and it will save us some space on the server).

Note: some picture filenames seem to cause problems. I recommend naming files without special characters (!#@$%^&*() and without spaces for best results.

Quoting a previous post

The quote function is a little goofy. I am working on making it easier. The problem is that is is hard to tell where to type to keep your reply outside of the original quoted text. If you make sure you arrow the cursor all the way to the bottom of the reply before typing it usually works. Another helpful option is to click the "Show Blocks" toggle button just to the left of the help icon on the editor toolbar. This will add lines around the various sections so you can see where the quote ends. Just type in the last block in the editor to get outside the quote.

Subscribing to threads

One very nice thing about modern forums is that they allow you to subscribe to a thread and get an email when there is a response. You can also suscribe to an entire forum section and get notified if there are any new threads started.

To subscribe when you are starting or replying to a thread.

Check the "Notification" checkbox below the editor while writing the post.

To subscribe to someone elses thread

Check the "Email me when this forum has a new thread." at the bottom right of the thread detail screen.

To subscribe to an entire section

Check the "Email me when this forum has a new thread." checkbox at the bottom right of the specific forum.
(Note: if it is a high traffic forum, you're gonna get a lot of emails)

You can unsubscribe by unchecking the box (obvious).
